Origins of colors variability among C-cluster main-belt asteroids

چکیده

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey provides colors for more than 100,000 moving objects, among which a significant fraction has albedos determined. Here we combined and albedo in order to perform cluster analysis on the main-belt asteroid population, identify C-cluster, group of related C-type as defined earlier work. Members this C-cluster are fair agreement with color boundaries B DeMeo Carry (2013). We then compare asteroids those carbonaceous chondrites powders, while taking into account effect phase angle. show that only CM have range asteroids, CO, CR CV being significantly redder. Also, powders average slightly redder C-cluster. members further investigated by looking at variations function diameter. observe visible slope becomes bluer decreasing diameter, transition seems be present around 20 km. discuss origin variation and, if not bias dataset - analysis, conclude it is surface texture smaller objects covered rocks or large fragments, larger particulate surface. blueing interpreted an increased contribution first reflection case rock-dominated surfaces, can scatter light Rayleigh-like manner. do unambiguous evidence space weathering within based however generally nature compared could some extent weathering.

Polarimetric survey of main-belt asteroids⋆

Aims. We present the first results of a polarimetric survey of main-belt asteroids at Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (Casleo), San Juan, Argentina. The aims of this survey are to increase the database of asteroid polarimetry, to estimate diversity in polarimetric properties of asteroids that belong to different taxonomic classes, and to search for objects that exhibit anomalous polarimetric p...

Active Asteroids: Mystery in the Main Belt

Classically, comets from the outer solar system (beyond the orbit of Neptune), are expected to be icy, and thus active near the Sun, while asteroids in the inner solar system (interior to the orbit of Jupiter) are expected to be relatively ice-deficient, and thus inert. Studies of anomalous objects, most recently 133P/Elst-Pizarro, challenge this classical picture, however, and suggest that eit...

The Orbital and Absolute Magnitude Distributions of Main Belt Asteroids

We have developed a model-independent analytical method for debiasing the fourdimensional (a, e, i,H) distribution obtained in any asteroid observation program and have applied the technique to results obtained with the 0.9m Spacewatch Telescope. From 1992 to 1995 Spacewatch observed ∼ 3740 deg2 near the ecliptic and made observations of more than 60,000 asteroids to a limiting magnitude of V∼2...

Detection of the Yarkovsky effect for main-belt asteroids

The Yarkovsky effect, a non-gravitational acceleration produced by the anisotropic emission of thermal energy (Öpik, 1951, Proc. Roy. Irish Acad. 54, 165–199), plays an important role in the dynamical evolution of asteroids. Current theoretical models of the Yarkovsky effect, however, rely on a number of poorly known parameters that can only approximate how real asteroids respond to solar heati...

The Lifetime of Ice on Main Belt Asteroids

We theoretically estimate the loss rate of buried ice from spherical bodies 2Y3.3 AU from the Sun. The loss rate is explored as a function of about a dozen parameters. We introduce the concept of a ‘‘buried snow line,’’ where the loss of ice is sufficiently slow over the age of the solar system. For a dusty surface layer, ice can persist within the top few meters of the surface over billions of ...
